It shows that the Catholic Church actually was trying to protect the natives of Mexico from the conquistadors, and that bishops such as Vasco de Quiroga and Zumarraga went to great lengths, even personal danger in order to protect the local population, who they believed|About the Author|Bernardino Verástique (1947–2000) was Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio.
